Beginners and Camera Settings Photography Class

Beginners and Camera Settings Photography Class

Saturday the 11th of June
Hamble Waterfront - 9:00 am - 3 hours
Join me on the foreshore of the Hamble River where we will take some time as a group to get familiar with our camera settings and understand why shooting in "Auto" mode will not always cut it. By the end of our session on this picturesque part of the river, I would like to have you off Auto and shooting with Aperture or Shutter Priority and understanding what the heck that even means! The iconic pink ferry and a range of boating and water sports activities will give us plenty of inspiration to practice on.

Fireworks Photography Meetup

Fireworks Photography Meetup

Saturday the 5th of November
Hamble Area - 6:00 pm - 2 hours
Guy Fawkes night is one of the few winter nights that I will happily leave the house rugged up in my winter woolies. Come join me as I talk you through the best tips and techniques to capture some pretty unique outcomes. When I trotted along to my local display last year, I had no idea of the thrill I would get by experimenting with my camera settings. I still have at least 50 images from that night, each so unique, that I can't bring myself to part with any of them. One of which was shortlisted and 'Highly Commended' by the judges in the 'Creative' category for the Winchester Photographic Society Competition. On the night, we will spend the first 60 minutes getting your set up correct and getting familiar with the shooting options available and some tips that will enhance your creative effects. And then we'll capture the magic of the display itself. All you need is a basic understanding of your camera settings and some snuggly clothes. *Exact timings and location will be released nearer the time as local displays are announced.

Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.
Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations across the region.
New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month.
And once in a while we will run a special niche 3 hour class, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Join the Southampton Photography Facebook Group here to share your photos after the session.

Our classes and photography sessions are limited to a max of 5 students - due to current COVID restrictions
We ask that everyone attending a meetup follows social distancing guidelines:

Stay home if you're sick.
Keep 2 metres away from others.
Don't make unnecessary physical contact with others. Avoid physical greetings, such as handshakes, hugs and kisses.
Wash your hands regularly with alcohol-based sanitiser.
Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Use a flexed elbow or a tissue; if you use a tissue, dispose of it immediately and appropriately.

Excellent. Simon was a wealth of knowledge, I thought his presentation was full of great content, and it’s a credit to him that he went to that effort out in the field. And in the rain. Loads of good tips and techniques were covered today with hands on advice, despite the rather wretched conditions. I now have some great food for thought for my future compositions. Good location too

It was a very helpful session providing clear explanations and instructions on the basic use, set up and functioning on the Camera. I particular learnt a lot and felt that the practical exercises helped put the verbal suggestions into context.

It was a very straight forward, no nonsense, easy to understand and easy to grasp introduction to using my camera in manual mode, with everything explained to I knew why as well as how. My daughter and I both attended and thoroughly enjoyed the event - thank you to Dave!

INSTRUCTORS
Kate Dunlop
Since her childhood in Australia, Kate has always loved photography. Her passion was inherited through her Dad and inspired by the images he recorded during his conscription into the Vietnam war. The images gave an insight into a world that she could never have imagined and the power of that led her to save her pocket money for her first camera at 8 years old. When her family moved to the UK, a world of travel opened up with Europe on her doorstep. Her passion for travel developed and went hand in hand with her ever present camera. Over the years, Kate has taken every opportunity to photograph the everyday, the unique and the remote in all corners of the globe. Her biggest mistake? Not allowing herself the full training required to get the very best out of her exotic images. Amid the chaos of the pandemic, she knuckled down and studied her craft from the inside out and has now taken her photography full time. A versatile photographer, refusing to be boxed into one genre, Kate's entry into the Winchester Photographic Society was greeted with accolades from esteemed guest judges and her work has been published in the 2020 Audley Travel calendar. With a growing professional portfolio, more adventures on the horizon and an unstoppable enthusiasm, Kate looks forward to sharing with you the knowledge, techniques and tips she wishes she'd learned years ago.
